Character Profile 1 - Damen/Damien
For the dominant male character who is portrayed stereotypically as an anti social chav these are the clothing idea's that I think would be good to use to create an atmosphere about him.
Here are the clothing idea's for the character of Damien/Damen.
These are trackie bottoms that seems to be well liked and well used by the public and the target audience of 15-21 year olds. These trainers are used by boy aged 15-18 and seems to be common as a lot of the male audience at the college and in the public area's like Leicester's High Cross and parks around Leicestershire. This hoody I thought would be good to use as it fits the stereotypical image to represent the young individual who is seen as a typical 15-18 year old chav. This hoody was also chosen as the public- especially the target audience of 15-21 wears these. This also gives the era and the age of the characters to the audience. The colour palet of the hoody and the trackie bottoms being black has been chosen as so the character Damen/Damien can disappear into the darkness like the stereotypical chav would after a brawl. The hat is used to create the appearence of a stereotypical chav seen by the public and in the films.
Dialect- The dialect for the character of Damen/Damien would be slang and non formal in comparrison to the character profile 3.
This is my idea's put on to paper in class. This shows the processes of Damen/Damien becoming more than a charactature. This image also shows how the character was created in the group.
This is how we created the character in class of Damien/Damen

Experiements With Font Styles
The purpose for the questionnaire was to see how fonts influence the audiences mind to give the indication of the type of film.
The font styles mzy have an effect on any films give the indication of the type of genre to the audience. The font styles in films show the conventions. For example in a children’s film the font types used would have to be a child like writting or a happy style font.
For the questionnaires there was 6 fonts to see and there was two under the category as child font, 2 under the category of thriller and 2 under the category of Film Noir. As some of the ages may not understand what these are I put in brackets what they are in simple terms. Film Noir was described as old black and white films, thrillers as scary films and children's as cartoon films with examples. To keep the questionnaries interesting I put some pictures on to illustrate and look more appealing.
Questionnaire
The fonts I used in my questionarries were of a site http://www.1001freefonts.com/
There are genres on the site that I used. One of them were Thriller's, one was gothetic, one was Graffetti and the others were ones that were already on the site.
The questionarries that I sent out looked like this...
The answers given I put on a bar chart and looked like this...
Thriller- 0 Votes
Children- 6 Votes
Film Noir-0 Votes
Thriller-6 Votes

Film Noir-5 Votes
In the questionnaires, there was a paper attachment that stated Any Extra Comments?
There was only one comment. The comments were for how the fonts effected the persecption of the audiece. The comment stated "The questionnaire was useful to test how the mind works in the judgement of the film being watched. The titles created different feelings and emotions in my mind therefore creating a stereotypical view of the film before giving the film a chance. The fonts used gave me an insite to my own mind and how my mind can be influenced."
Analysis Of Disturbia
The film “Disturbia” was made in 2007 by the director D.J. Caruso. The main actors are Shia LaBeouf, Sarah Roemer, David Morse, Aaron Yoo and Carrie-Anne Moss. The film runs for 105 minutes. Disturbia was filmed on location in the cities of Whittier, California and Pasadena, California. It was released on the 14 September 2007 in the UK. The genre for the film is Thriller and Mystery. The plot is after Kale's father is killed in a car accident, things take a turning point in Kale Brecht’s life and he is placed under house-arrest for punching his Spanish teacher after his teacher made a comment about his father. Having nothing better to do, Kale occupies himself by spying on his neighbours. But one night, Kale witnesses what appears to be a murder at Mr. Turner's house. Kale becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth behind these murders but, after a few unsettling run-ins with Mr. Turner, it becomes a matter of life and death for them both.
The tag line for the film when released in the cinema is ‘Every killer lives next door to someone’ I was drawn towards the film from the tag line and the trailer. This is the cover to the film. The cover drawn me in as there is a conventional black background vs. a white text. Also the conventional black and white colour pallet of the face indicates mystery and the indication of a thriller. The contrast of colours also indicate a mixture of different emotions and rules but also the battle of a thrilling plot to me.
Intital Idea's
- Plot- A flash back of a party in the background with 2 characters - a boy and a girl talking. For effects an idea would to be to experiement with sound to add tension. The boy and girl seem to get really close to each other. Then the flash back ends whilst there is a voice over and the blank back screen fades into a face that is nervous and telling a story. Then a flash back, back to the party where a pair of eyes look through the window. Then the sound of a heart beat increases as the camera goes outside and follows the masked guy. The door swings open and to add effect a loud bang is created from http://www.freesound.org/ As the masked man comes into room no one seems to be paying attension. Then the masked man goes to stab the other boy who is with the girl. The knife comes towards the camera and there is a sound of metal going into someone and the shot goes black.
- Then the title comes up and the audience is left to wonder about the possiblities. Then next shot is in the past and the girl and two boys are walking happy with the voice over narrating the story of the events that happened in the future. Thats wear it ends.
Idea's
This is our brain storm from what we did in class.
The idea's determine that...
- Nial is the voice over- We got this idea as in conventional thriller films there is always a voice over. Normally in a conventional thriller, it is told in flash back mode. We thought of this idea from watching The Usual Suspects
- We also thought of telling the film in flashback mode though to experiement with the lighting styles and the colour. This came from Film Noir
- We thought of 2/3 characters that are main whilst having a party in the background to make it a stereotypical weekend for the target audience.
- Our target audience is 16-21 year olds as they are more likely to go to the cinema.
- The genre is thrillers.

Analysis Of Cobra
The opening sequence on youtube
The Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4rmihj_4YY
The opening sequence of the film Cobra starts of with a black background with red writting on, with the company 'WARNER BROS PRESENTS', the production 'CANNON GROUP, INC GOLAN- GLOBUS PRODUCTION', the directors name 'A GEORGE P COSMATOS FILM' and the main actors name 'Sylvestor Stallone.' The black background is conventional as it is to show the mystery and the hidden twist in the sarkness. The red writting could suggest the blood, the lives lost and the danger of the film- which again is conventional. These four shots take up 30seconds of the film. The camera seems to be moving as to show the unstead film thats about to begin.
After the titles, there is an image of tatoo of a cobra snake zooming out as the snake is shown only the head and fangs. As it zooms out, the main character voice is heard in the background saying statistics abouts the world like : "In America there is a burglary every 11 seconds, an armed robbery every 65seconds, A violent crime every 25seconds, a murder every 24minutes and 250 rapes a day" by the time the speech has ended the snake has gone. The snake is zoomed out to show an arm and then a hand over the snake. The camera follows the arm to reveal a gun, where then the gun is moving towards the screen and is pointing directly at the audince. The gun looks quite threatening and seems to be showing the audince that they are in danger as the gun is going to be pulled by the main character who though still is annomous. By this time this scene is finished it has taken up 57seconds. Then the gun is fired though the sound has been muffled. The gun fires and the audience sees the bullet come out of the gun and the blast from the gun as the specs of power flies out quickly. The bullet comes towards the screen by the time of 1m and after the bullets hits the screen the title of the film comes up in capital letters. The title Cobra is in black writting and is on a red background. Therefore the colours of the background and writting has changed to show the sudden change in the mood of the film.
Then out of the red background, the title fades away as a man on a motobike comes into the picture. The sounds turns to a drum beat with an echo was the scene of the biker is cute to and fro to a dark room with black shaddows on the door and on the floor. The shots of the biker coming forward contrasted with the drak room with someone walking through it (with the water on the floor) shows that something is about to happen. With the eerie sound also adds to the effect of the film. The music gets louder as it becomes clearer that the person in the dark room is holding two long axes in both hands. As the person walks closer it becomes apparent that it is a man, and behind the man there is a red X with a skull in the middle of it. Then there is a close up shot of a mans face though it is shadowed out and you can only see the outline of the figure of the man. The shots switching, shows the man on the motobike coming increasingly close as you can make out his figure. There are still titles coming up over the images in red of the actors and actresses. Next the sound becomes more ambient as the sound of the motobike is heard.
The next sequences of shots are quite disturbing as they involve a group of men clashing together two axes as some sort of group.
The audience is lead to beleive anything at the end of the opening to the film. As the audience is left to wonder Who they are? What Are they doing? Who was the voice? Etc.
Background information
Cobra
Cobra is the oldest film in the collection I have chosen. The film was directed in 1986 by the director George P Cosmatos. The film was released in the UK on the 1st of August 1986. The well known tagline is ‘Crime is the disease. Meet the Cure.’ The film is about Lt. Marion Cobretti, nicknamed Cobra, is a sunglass wearing, tooth pick chewing cop who is all about getting the criminal and breaking the rules. Cobra is set a real challenge when a killer cult is spreading rapidly in the city. The cult kills innocent people, seeming to pick random victims and slaying them with jagged knifes and getting off on the hunted’s fear. But they make a huge mistake when they kill a woman at an bus stop and a young model sees them. She doesn't exactly know that they've killed someone, but is extremely scared when one of the killers, a muscle bound and rather deformed looking man, gives her a spine chilling look. Soon the killers are after her. Cobra is soon on the seen, with his partner the junk food loving, Sergeant Gonzales. They ask the young model, whose name turns out to be Ingrid, if she saw the killers. She says she only saw some people at the bus stop acting very odd and a man who scared her badly. Cobra soon connects a supermarket killing, that involved a psycho who claimed that he was part of "the new order" who would wipe out the weak and make the strong survive, to the mass murders ripping at the soft under belly of the capital. They end up in a chemical factory and finally Night Slasher and Cobra come face to face. In a very psychotic speech Night Slasher says that Cobra's law is weak and that their cult will always survive. This sends Cobra off the deep end and Slasher onto a huge metal hook that rips through his back and sends him off into a molten vat of metal. Nancy however is still alive and tries to kill Cobra, but she is also killed. After all the bloodshed, Cobra and Ingrid emerged slightly bruised and dirty, from the factory. The Captain congratulates Cobra, but Monte is too proud to actually admit that Cobra one the fight. He picks up his bit about too much excessive force, but earns himself a good punch from Cobra, sending him to the ground stone cold. Ingrid and Cobra ride off on a motorbike into the sunset to Kiss singing "Can you get enough me baby, I can't get enough of you." In true Stallone/ Cobra style, the day is saved and the conveniently pretty chic is too.The film was nominated for six awards. The film Cobra stars Sylvester Stallone as Cobra, Brigitte Nielsen as Ingrid, Reni Santoni and Sergeant Gonzales, Andrew Robinson as Dective Monte and Brian Thompson as the Night Slasher. This film is based on a book written by Paula Gosling.
The film Cobra also portrays a conventional red background to suggest blood, danger or both. The main character is in the background who is taking up most of the space on the DVD cover. The cover has the main character in the background wearing black to stand out; the character is holding a gun and is wearing sun glasses to suggest danger and action. The writing again is conventional as there is red and white writing to suggest blood and innocents.
Film Noir
Film Noir is a type of genre created in the 1940's. It orginates from the french. "Film Noir" was first introduced by the famous french critic Nino Frank and used to determine Hollywood crime dramas of that era. "Film Noir" often contains sexual motivations of a 'Femme-Fatal' character. "Femine Fatale" is a woman usually married but want want to get rid of her husband, the character is protrayed as having loose morals too. Low-key lighting and in black and white is also used in "Film Noir" instead of black and white. On the other hand it has been argued to "Film Noir" can be seen to be its own genre in its own right. The black and white colour pallet is used to hisw feelings and motivation, the dark world of the protogonist are in and to create tension using shadows. "Film Noir" is often told in retrospect- the use of voice overs and/or flashbacks, also it has often has a twist (an unexpected ending) and usually set in an urban environment.
Film Noir was in the time period of 1938 and 1955 in oppose to the New Noir which was created in the late 1960's.
Examples of Film Noir- Double Idemnity, Postman Always Rings Twise.
Examples of New Noir- Recreation John Dahl The Last Seduction, Batman.
Film Noir in french means black film. However film noir is influenced a lot by German Expressionism (this means a cinematic movement of the 1910's and the 1920's closely related to the developments in the theatre, photography, painting, scupture and architecture).
The 1940s and 1950s are generally seen as the "classic period" of American film noir.
The Usual Suspects
The usual suspects we catched in class and made some notes.
The film The Usual Suspects was filmed and produced in 1995 by the director Bryan Singer. The Usual Suspects is also an example of a thriller that portrays quite a few conventions. The Usual Suspects portray conventions such as…
A traditional twist at the end of the film- where the entire full picture is finally revealed to the audience at the final moments of the film
Normal there are a lot of death just like in The Usual Suspects
Normally there are a mainly male case- as the males portray a strong roles in thrillers. As the woman conventionally take a side line role unless it is a “film noir”
Left open ended- Conventionally the case is left unsolved, no closure for the audience.
The Audience has got to work the storyline out- as it isn’t spelt out for them
Normally there is action and Violence- Though normally cut away- making it less graphic and fast paced.
Change of Time Period- The story is normally told in the flashback sequence.
Also there is a first hand accounts which tend to be unreliable.
The plot of the Uusal Suspects; which is told using the flashback formation, is at the start of the film there is an explosion of a boat with criminals dead. Then the title of the film comes up. Where the audience is lead to the future where one of the criminals is at the police station. This is where the story begins. The storyline is revealed to the audience in flashbacks of the character Verbal played by the actor Kevin Spacey. The storyline is told through Verbals eyes until the end where there is a conventional twist in the plot.
