The Usual Suspects

The usual suspects we catched in class and made some notes.

The film The Usual Suspects was filmed and produced in 1995 by the director Bryan Singer. The Usual Suspects is also an example of a thriller that portrays quite a few conventions. The Usual Suspects portray conventions such as…
A traditional twist at the end of the film- where the entire full picture is finally revealed to the audience at the final moments of the film
Normal there are a lot of death just like in The Usual Suspects
Normally there are a mainly male case- as the males portray a strong roles in thrillers. As the woman conventionally take a side line role unless it is a “film noir”
Left open ended- Conventionally the case is left unsolved, no closure for the audience.
The Audience has got to work the storyline out- as it isn’t spelt out for them
Normally there is action and Violence- Though normally cut away- making it less graphic and fast paced.
Change of Time Period- The story is normally told in the flashback sequence.
Also there is a first hand accounts which tend to be unreliable.

The plot of the Uusal Suspects; which is told using the flashback formation, is at the start of the film there is an explosion of a boat with criminals dead. Then the title of the film comes up. Where the audience is lead to the future where one of the criminals is at the police station. This is where the story begins. The storyline is revealed to the audience in flashbacks of the character Verbal played by the actor Kevin Spacey. The storyline is told through Verbals eyes until the end where there is a conventional twist in the plot.
